Learn to Throw on the Potter’s Wheel
Bozeman potter, Carl Sheehan, will be offering a seven week high-fire course focusing on mastering the potter’s wheel to create high fire stoneware pottery. Open to beginning and intermediate skill levels, the class will continue to build on techniques introduced in the winter session. Class begins Thursday, March 27th from 7:00 to 9:30pm in the pottery studio at the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture annex.
This fun class has consistently been Carl’s most popular offering for beginning and intermediate skill levels. Students will focus on the use of the potter’s wheel to form and create a variety of functional stoneware pottery such as cups, bowls, pitchers and teapots. Individuals will learn basic skills on the wheel, decorative techniques, and glaze formulation through weekly demonstrations. Class fee is $170.00 for Emerson members or $190.00 for non-members and includes 25 pounds of clay, use of studio space and tools. There will also be a small firing fee per piece to cover costs of glazes and natural gas for final firing in Carl’s downdraft kiln at his studio west of Belgrade.
Carl Sheehan is a graduate of Montana State University and has been a studio potter and teacher of pottery classes in Bozeman since 1977. Beginning in 1980, Carl has been featured as the resident potter at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park at the Old Faithful Lodge. His work is available locally in downtown Bozeman at Grey Fox Gallery and at the Museum of the Rockies Gift Shop.
